In the past the elephants had migratory routes.  Then man interfered and fenced in game Reserves. Elephants were left in small islands (pockets) cut off from their extended families.

Space For Elephants Foundation is a national organization facilitating more space through a network of corridors throughout the country to give back to the elephants their SPACE and through this a sound economic base for the people living adjacent to the corridors. As a great African asset elephants need to be included in the economic equation.

~ HOW IT HAPPENED! ~

The elephant bulls translocated to Pongola Game Reserve were monitored by specialist game rangers.  The bulls moved out of the fenced areas and explored neighbouring game reserves to visit elephant cow herds.  No aggression was noted.  The neighbouring farmers and game reserves assisted by cutting the fences to allow the bull elephant’s safe passage through their land.  The bulls returned to Pongola Game Reserve and a year later, the cows that they had visited, arrived at the fences of Pongola Game Reserve.  "Let this happen throughout the country" thought one of the elephant owners, Dr Heinz Kohrs and Space For Elephants Foundation was born.

The Elephant  was the original communicator in Africa, opening up pathways through the bush and over mountains for man to follow, thus uniting the continent, therefore the elephant is the symbol of African Unity.

The Elephant is the strongest and largest animal in the World, the king of all animals and therefore is the   symbol of power.

The Elephant has a powerful sense “of family” and the members of the herd are connected by strong bonds, therefore being a symbol of family unity and the African philosophy of Ubuntu.

Elephants are a Keystone species, they have the ability to shape or modify their habitat. As a pioneer species, they open the way through forests and all terrain for other species to follow.

ODE TO THE ELEPHANT

“You whose feet pounded the earth,
the hard earth into powder in ancient times,
so that green things may grow
You are the protecting spirit of Africa.
You are the whisper of our stories in the wind
that has forgotten its heritage
I salute you, elephants of the plains of Africa
Bayete, elephant!”
