ELEPHANTS ARE WORTH MORE TO AFRICA ALIVE THAN DEAD
In the past elephants had migratory routes. Man interfered. Fenced Game Reserves. Human Encroachment! Elephants were left in small islands (pockets) cut off from their extended families.
Space For Elephants Foundation as a national organization endeavors to create more space through a network of corridors throughout the country to give back to the elephants their SPACE and to create a sound economic base to the people living along these corridors. Elephants need to be included in the economic equation to become an asset to the people of Africa. We will incorporate the people and wildlife in a vast network of conservation and economic patnership. Protecting our natural and cultural heritage for our future.
"You whose feet pounded the earth, the hard earth into powder in ancient times, so that green things might grow You are the protecting spirit of Africa You are the whisper of our stoies in the wind that has forgotten its heritage I salute you, elephant of the plains of Africa Bayete, elephant!'"
Credo Mutwa
HOW IT HAPPENED! Elephant families were translocated to Pongola Game Reserve in Maputaland. The bulls that were monitored by specialist game rangers, were observed to "go walk about!" They moved out of the fenced areas of Pongola Game Reserve, explored neighbouring game reserves to visit other elephant cow herds. No aggression was noted. The neighbouring farmers and game reserves assisted by cutting fences to allow the bull elephants safe passage through their land. The bulls subsequently returned to Pongola Game Reserve and a year later, the cows that they had visited, left their game reserve, and arrived at the fences of Pongola Game Reserve.
"Let this happen throughout the country" thought one of the elephant owners, Dr Heinz Hohrs. & Space For Elephants Foundation was born
