COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

SMALL BUSINESS VENTURES
An essential objective of Space For Elephants Foundation is the active participation of people living in the corridor areas.  We are encouraging the people to become entrepreneurs of small businesses and to create their own means of earning a living.  We are achieving this by giving them the necessary skills to successfully manage different ventures.

BHEKAMANZI THONGA VILLAGE
(please click on the tab on left 'Thonga Village' for more details)
This is delightful joint venture between the Ama-Thonga people and Space For Elephants Foundation.  Close to the Ndumo Game Reserve and Tembe Elephant Park.

THE GEMSTONE AND GEOLOGY TRAIL
The majestic Lubombo Mountains are well known for their deposits of crystals and gemstones.  Space For Elephants Foundation assisted one of the communities in that area with imput about the value of the rocks under their feet.  A small "primitive" digging was started.  Together with the local diggers, YOU can dig for your own treasures of the earth.

INDIGENOUS MEAL
Prepared at a typical Zulu home.  A wholesome and delicious experience.  Visitors have expressed their surprise at tasting foods that are cooked in the traditional manner.

THE FOLLOWING SMALL BUSINESS VENTURES ARE IN NEED OF ASSISTANCE TO BECOME VIABLE:

A jewellery design workshop  for one of our creative gemstone diggers.
Paper making out of elephant dung:
  -  a simple elephant dung paper-making project has been started.  This venture is inundated with orders that cannot be fulfilled due to lack of equipment.
Printing and binding of story books:  -  the printing and binding of story booklets about African Tales and short stories written by famous early game rangers are in the production stages.  Funding is needed to establish an efficient marketing and distribution network.
Tiger and Fly Fishing:  -  this popular sport is now being offered by our young tour guides who have recently been trained by Space For Elephants Foundation.  They need to be assisted with boats and fishing gear.
Canoeing:  -  An adventure sport that can be developed if canoes and the appropriate safety equipment could be provided to our young tour guides.
Birding:  -  The Zululand, Thongaland area has the highest number of bird species in South Africa.  Our keen bird guides desperately need binoculars, reference books and further training.
